Scratch testing device for characterizing the adhesion and scratch resistance of thin coatings and bulk materials

The scratch testing method involves scoring the surface with a diamond tip under a constant or progressive load. During the scratch process, the specimen moves under the video system to examine the various types of damages caused by the tip and correlate them with the applied load.

The images can be digitized and precisely mapped onto emission, acoustic, and load diagrams. This standard procedure enables the comparison of different coatings, substrates, coating thicknesses, surface preparations, and the scratch resistance of bulk materials.

Features include an acoustic emission sensor, multi-pass scratch function (repeated scratching along the same track), friction force measurement, and the 2018 upgrade: new illumination system with analyzer, polarizer, 2 apertures and filters, plus high-resolution INFINITY 5X and 20X objectives, and lens holder with adjustment screws for easy tip/microscope calibration.

Includes calibration set for table speed and applied load sensor.
